EU Watchdogs Want to Regulate the Metaverse

The head of the EU’s antitrust authority, Margrethe Vestager, has said the metaverse could be the next target for regulators, Reuters has reported.

She has expressed concern about Meta’s dominance in this niche and has also noted that the political debate on the issue of the metaverse segment has already begun, but European jurisdictions are moving at different speeds on the issue.

Vestager has added:

“It’s already time for us to start asking what healthy competition would look like in the metaverse. We are moving at different speeds. We will not get the same legal framework. And maybe that is not a bad thing. Because that will allow us to hone our toolkits in the process of mutual learning.”

Over the past year, Meta has actively merged into the field of virtual worlds, launching virtual reality and augmented reality developments. However, according to the Q4 2022 report, losses associated with the metaverse Reality Labs division of the company’s structure amounted to $4.28 billion.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has attributed the poor financial performance to a decline in sales of the Quest 2 virtual reality headset and an increase in internal spending.
